HypnoBirthing & Hypnobabies in Vancouver

Last night in our Free Monthly Prenatal Group, we got to talking about HypnoBirthing and Hypnobabies. These are the two most common “brands” of childbirth hypnosis, and they are getting increasingly popular as a method of preparing for birth.

I’m a trained “hypno-doula”, meaning I’ve taken continuing education for supporting couples who are planning to use childbirth hypnosis techniques in their birthing time.

Over the last year, I have supported several births using the Hypnobabies and HypnoBirthing models, and I’ve really enjoyed them! You can click here to see some photos and read the story of one of my happy childbirth hypnosis clients in Vancouer.  Based on my experiences, I’ll give you a run down of the benefits of childbirth hypnosis and the differences between the various options.

Benefits of Hypnobirthing & Hypnobabies

  • Both Hypnobirthing and Hypnobabies provide you with specific tools to maintain a positive mindset about birth during pregnancy and during birth itself
  • Both encourage women to take charge of their own births by learning to trust their bodies and to take leading role in their maternal health care
  • There is a focus on positive use of birth language, to help us release the negative connotations associated with the way our culture usually speaks about birth
Regardless of which childbirth hypnosis tools clients seem to be actively using during their births, they tend to exude an overall calmness and trust in themselves which is invaluable during childbirth.

Hypnobabies Childbirth Education

Hypnobabies is a “complete” childbirth education program. This means it includes information found in regular prenatal classes in addition to childbirth hypnosis techniques.  I’ve observed many different prenatal education options here in Vancouver, and I was very impressed with the quality of content in Hypnobabies.

Hypnobabies prenatal education can be done as as self-study program or in a classroom setting, depending on your needs and budget. You can find detailed information on the Hypnobabies BC Website.

HypnoBirthing Childbirth Preparation

HypnoBirthing is primarily a training on the use of  hypnosis during childbirth, and can be used on its own or in addition to another prenatal education program. There is a book you can purchase and read on your own, and there are also hypnotherapists here in Vancouver who teach classes in the techniques.  Taking a class can really help you prepare for using the tools during pregnancy and birth. You can find detailed information on the HypnoBirthing Website.

Hypno-Doula For Childbirth Hypnosis Parents

If you are using Hypnobirthing or Hypnobabies techniques to prepare for childbirth, you may want to considering hiring a hypno-doula. A hypno-doula is a doula trained and experienced with the hypnosis tools you will be using during your birthing time.

Vancouver has so many wonderful birth options available!  I did notice a few key parts of Hypnobabies not mentioned.  Hypnobabies teaches medical anesthesia, like one would use if having a surgical procedure done without anesthesia due to an allergy or similar issue. This “hypno-anesthesia” is unique to Hypnobabies.  Hypnobabies also teaches “Eyes Open Childbirth Hypnosis” which allows a mother to remain deeply in hypnosis while opening her eyes, talking, eating, and moving around.  This too really helps moms stay deeply relaxed AND listen to their bodies as they need to move and adjust to help their baby come down.

Hello Nuturedbirth, I am a home birth midwife in Costa Rica and I am looking to do a hypnobirthing teacher training. I visit Vancouver because I have family there. Do you know of a training I could do? And suggestions appreciated. Marie Tyndall MAMASOL Association. Costa Rica

Thanks for the mention Jessica! I love teaching Hypnobabies and attending births as a Hypno-Doula. As you know I finally got to experience my own Hypnobabies birth in June!! It helped me immensely to be able to birth naturally for 78 hours with confidence! It ended with a peaceful home water birth :-)

I am so happy you are going to be back in teacher-action in a few months! I highly recommend your class as an option for women / couples seeking a class that teaches about normal birth.
